'98 E320(W210) Front shock replacement question
1. What's the procedure for replacing the front shock absorbers on a W210?
2. What are the torque specifications? I bought some Bilstein heavy duty shocks, and the included instructions weren't very useful. After removing the tire I raised the lower control arm slightly with a jack for support. I was able to release the bottom mount without too much trouble, but I couldn't free the nut on the top mount. Is there a trick to doing this? Thanks in advance. |
There was a good werite up about this procedure in a STAR magazine within the past year.

Could someone summarize the article?
How could I find that STAR article? Join MBCA? |
You can join MBCA at www.mbca.org and get the back issue of the STAR. You can also find it in the Technical Companion here - http://www.toadhallbook.com/book.cfm?GI=1&CI=3. It's a great compilation of 50 years worth of STAR atricles. Even as a member for years, I find it really nice to have all the technical articles in one place for reference.

Just got done replacing all four shock absorbers on my '97 E300. Piece of cake. 2 1/2 hours flat to do all four! I used Bilstein HD's and the ride is SO much nicer now. The old shocks were beyond dead - you could very easily compress them by hand while the new Bilstein HD's required substantial effort.
Having a second floor jack helped with the front ones, since compressing the suspension gives a lot more working room. :D |
