older mercedes purchase- 220 or 240?

I am considering purchasing either a 220 or a 240 Mercedes (I came across a 220 that seems in very good body conditon yesterday and have been reading posts on the 300 and 240's as far as reliability). I don't know very much about these cars except for their legendary reliability. I have experience in general mechanical repairs to German cars (although mostly BMW's at this point), and am looking to purchase a 60-70's Mercedes that has classic lines, easy to work on, offers manual transmission, great build quality, and are economical and reliable. Basically, I am looking for a classic mercedes which I can do major work on if need be, and one that is economical to operate and will retain value because of its era. Are these two the best bets for the Mercedes line-up? What are the significant diferences in these two cars? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you
