'96 c280 aux fans

I'm new to this forum and I must say I have never seen so much information in one place about Mercedes! I'm hoping someone can answer a simple question. I have a '96 C280 with 63,000 miles. I recently had the A/C compressor replaced and the shop said that I needed the aux. fan on the right side because it wasn't working. From what I have read on this forum, isn't that the high speed fan that comes on after 105c? The left fan comes on when the a/c is activated, correct? I'm just getting conflicting information and I need to get it straight so I don't spend $150 unnecessarily.
Thanks for any help in this matter.

Both fans come one. Either they both run on low speed or they both run on high. You won't have one run and not the other, they will both run at the same time.

The fans are wired in tandam, should work together at variable speeds!

My left fan sounds like a piece of paper is stuck in there when it kicks in (slap-slap-slap-slap). I looked carefully but can't find anything down there. Any ideas what could cause a sound like that?

It's the Slapper !!!

Turn the fan blade by hand and see if it is hitting anywhere
[ leaves/twigs,etc]
if not , it is likely a broken brush inside the motor

Slapper........lol

I turned it and no noise, there were some dead bugs (big Florida kind) that I sprayed out. But noise continues on.

Broken brush....needs to be addressed asap? Or no? Can I take apart and fix, or do I need to replace the entire motor?

Thanks!

Up to you ..
I always pull things apart before buying a new one , just to see what's up..
Sometimes you get in there and it is just a simple little thing..

I'll take a look.

I don't hear it inside the car....... ;)

Thanks for the reply, Doc. Wow...almost 4800 posts!! That's almost four posts a day since you've been here! You must really LOVE this!! Sorry..I digress. Therefore the shop was correct in telling me I have to replace the right side fan. Do any of yoose guys know a decent source for this(I.E. cheap!!)? I don't see the bolts, and I assume it's not a complete assembly. The bolts facing inward towards the condenser? I haven't pulled it out yet. Thanks for your reply, including Ali. I will be back frequently. This a great source!!
