Outside temperature display

W126 1989 300 SEL. The outside temperature display has missing segments. The odd thing is, none are out permanently. They sometimes work, sometimes not. Different segments work at different times. I've never seen all working at the same time. My questions: Can the display be repaired, or is it replace only?

The temp display is basically like a digital watch. If the screen is defective, then pretty much its a replace only. But you say that your segments are all there except not showing up at the right moments? If thats the case, I don't know whats causing that.. but it will definately need some work/replacement. Pretty much the easiest thing to do is replace. My guess is the screen is bad. In that case, the unit in the gauge cluster assembly needs to be replaced. Very easy job, pop out the cluster, unplug the cables on the back, and there are 2 screws holding the temp display. I am parting my 300SEL and I have that unit in working condition showing all digits/segments. Its in *F as well. If you need it, PM me.

It was the segments coming and going that gave me hope.

I'll be happy to relieve you of your working display. PM on the way.
