Dash Red Warning Light

I need some help..

I have a red dash warning light on..

CHECK ENGINE...

the car sounds and is driving great. no changes at all.

but I noticed when engine running, under the hood, a small red light on, I have no idea if it is related, or what the hell it even is?

its a big black plug on the sidewall located about even with the wheel it has 8 little lights. and # 4 is lit..

can anyone help me out? I want to avoid the $$ deal if I can

thanks

Matt

DON'T PRESS THAT BUTTON !!!!!!!
BANG !!!! Got CHA !!!!!

Ok... The button is so you can find out why the CE lamp came on .
Key ON , eng off
Pressure button and hold for 2-3 secs.
Release and see if some flashes come back at you with the LED
Count the flashes and do it again til the cycle repeats
Post what you find..

mattcara 07-15-2005 08:13 PM

wow this is fun! (so far!)

ok i pushed it..

the #4 light blinks 4 times in a row.

then i repeated it a few more times and it didnt blink.

I turned the key off and on again and it blinked 4 times again.

gulp.. now tell me the bad news... gentley please...

Arthur Dalton 07-15-2005 08:40 PM

Air flow sensor fault.
May be just some bad contact, so...

key ON
press but. 2-3 secs=release
code 4 will flash back
wait 2 secs, press but
hold for 8-9 sec
turn key off for 10sec
on for 10sec
Start car
CE should go out

Drive to see if CE returns

Arthur,

the light has stayed out,, thank you!

can i bother you with one more question? please......

its been brutally hot here in new jersey these past few day.. so top has been up and a/c on high.

i figure coolant temp to go up some.. how concerned should i be if the temp gauge starts to go up tooo much? and what can i do to not hurt the car..

i had changed a bad fuse and wow ,i was amazed i could do it! the cooling fan wasnt working properly and then it was..

you have to understand. this is new to me., and somewhat nerve raking. , but also fun,, i have never looked under a hood in my life.. i was a spoiled kid who always drove new cars.. this is my first venture with a classic car,. and if all goes well, i want to fill my garage with more.. there are soo many of my 80's dream cars out there with good prices.. i want a v12 jag next!

thanks again..

its been a pleasure, i know you saved me time and money..

Hotter weather may cause the coolant temp to go up during slow speed driving. At speeds over 40mph they should be back to normal.

If the temp is not back to 'normal' at speed, the radiator may not be performing at 100% due to exterior dirt, bugs, etc. blocking airflow, interior deposits blocking coolant flow, or some of each.

As long as the temps have not reached 'red line' on the coolant gauge, the engine has not 'overheated' but is 'running hotter' than usual.

Keep an eye out and tell us what you have found.

Best Regards,
Jim
