M104.992 Tensioner Problem...

I'm working on a water pump project for my 1993 300E 3.2 with a 104.992 engine. When I try to untension my drive belt for removal, the belt tensioner does not tighten or loosen the belt anymore although I see the tension pointer move form left to right and vice versa when I turn the tensioning nut. I need some advice on how to move forward. How do I proceed with removing my belt if my tensioner does not slacken anymore? Please help...anyone? I tried to search for similar threads with no luck.

You also have to slacken a couple of turns or so the 19 mm nut just below the pointer .... only then will the tensioner nut losen the belt. You may have to losen the fan shroud to get at the bolt. Search for threads re water pump r&r

- good luck

thanks for your input. sorry, i forgot to mention that i'm using the w124 cd as reference for this project. i took out the fan shroud and loosened the nut you mentioned before i started turning the tensioning nut to slacken the belt as directed by the cd procedures for poly v-belt removal. when i turn the tensioning nut, the tension pointer moves to the slacken position but the belt does not slacken. when i try to tighten the tensioning nut, the tension pointer moves to the tightened position but the belts do not tighten either. the belt just stays in the same tension level. i think there's something wrong with my tensioner. any advice on how i should move forward? thanks again

Been there, done that. Yep, they wear out. You should replace it while you are in there.

Thanks Steve. I got my v-belt out this morning so I'll go ahead and replace my tensioner while I'm at it.
