I am still a member of the Western Reserve section and used to sit on the Board of Directors. Politics were too much for me to bother with. Dropped the board but kept the membership solely for The Star magazine. It's by far the best car club magazine I have yet to see. I think it's worth the $45/year because you 1.) get a sweet magazine and 2.) get a 10% discount on MB parts from any dealership, which, if you buy enough parts or a really expensive one, will have saved you enough to pay for the membership and then some. I had fun when we hosted Gemutlichkeit '99 up in Cleveland. Lots of work, but a great time indeed. My former 6.9 saw lots of action that weekend!

I am a member. There does seem to be an excessive amount of politics and ill will, but of course you can tune that out. I enjoy the magazine. I particularly appreciate the old Frank King tech articles from the back issues. I bought every back issue still available for those articles.

I have been a member off and on for a good many years.I do not do the social part, but do like the magazine and raffle. This site is by far the best for tech help.I have a request of my fellow club members.Go to page 34 in the Jan-Feb issue of the star magazine read the caption under the picture. That statement is out of place and an insult to a lot of us.If you are inclined please E mail the Mag with your comments.Thank you Michael

I have been a member for about six years. I enjoy the magazine very much. I am not as excited when I get it now, because I get my thirst for MB technical information quenched every day at MShop.
I pay no attention to the club politics written in the issue. And I wish the club were more independent of MBUSA, but I do realize that there is probably subsistence money from them that helps support the great magazine. Recently there was a move to do away with the magazine. If that ever happens, I'll be outta' there. Have a great weekend, |

MBCA is a good way to meet MB enthusiasts in your area. The club here in the DC metropolitan area has a great bunch of folks, no "politics" that I can discern, and sponsors some very worthwhile (and fun) events. I enjoy reading the Star (can't get enough of MB lore) but when it comes to the exchange of technical advice/information, nothing beats Mercedesshop.com (awesome). I think a lot depends upon the MBCA members/activities in your area (unfortunately, I can't drive to Atlanta every month or so).

WHAT IF WE STARTED OUR OWN CLUB? Same type thing with NO politics! Not just staring at a computer, but meeting the people we interact with daily?
This is food for thought. Would we all pay a SMALL fee and appoint a director for our area? Have events? Lets think about this.

MBCA good points:
The Star magazine, Club events and socializing, introduction to other MB enthusiasts regionally and nationally, a few discounts on stuff. MBCA bad points: Recent dues increase, raffle prizes can't be won outside USA, other than Star magazine there are few member services and fewer on-line services, difficult attracting new members at local level, typical political/power games at national level. National tried to apply a greater dues increase to members outside USA and we really had to fight for equality. There is all sorts of crap about where the Star revenues go, etc. Personally, I'd rather not know and just enjoy the company of other MB enthusiasts.

I have been a member for several years. I like The Star, esp. for the ads and the pictures - check out the article on Gullwings in the current issue. I have enjoyed the DC area picnics and swap meets. The local chapter has sponsored DIY sessions at dealers and done stuff like show how new cars are prepped.
I like the Benzmac's idea of a competing organization. Chuck |

Let's work together not apart!
By all means, I would certainly encourage all "members" of MercedesShop to voice their criticism of MBCA along with any suggestions for improvement. I have yet to be involved with any organization that I could not find things that I would change if given the opportunity.
I benefit frequently by the information gleaned from the posts on MercedesShop and, being in the Atlanta area, look forward to the opening of MBAutowerks in the Spring. Donnie, perhaps it would be a good idea to invite the Peachtree Section of MBCA to hold a function at the new shop. You and your team could put on a tech session and also show off the new facility. A plug for MercedesShop and the PartsShop would also be in order. There is a role for MBCA, MercedesShop, and MBAutowerks to each serve the needs of the Mercedes owner and enthusiast.

Is the Star a monthly mag?
I just joined, and have never seen the Star mag. I'll be curious to see how it compares the the mags of the other car clubs that I am in, PCA (the Panorama) and BMW CCA (the Roundel). I think the Roundel is excellent. It is the only reason that I am a member of the BMW CCA. Tons of really useful tech stuff and great classifieds. Really interesting editorial type columns, too. The Panorama is ok at best. I was very active in PCA, serving on the board of my region for several years, participating in autocrosses, concours, social events, etc. Very nice people, at least in my region (Orange County, CA), although most are 10, 20 or 30 years older than me. I am curious as to what the MB Club "bad politics" are! Can anyone fill me in? Sounds exciting! 3 car clubs is a little much, I think at the end of the year I will pare them down to 1 or 2. I used to subscribe to a boatload of car mags (CD, RT, the club mags, Autoweek, European Car, Excellence, Racer, and others), but have pared those down, too. |

The Star comes every 2 months, last issue was January/February. It can be real entertaining, or kinda ho-hum. Usually it is pretty well rounded with something for everyone (vintage, racing, DIY/Technical, regional news/events, etc.) Most of the politics I saw on the MBUSA forum were more personalities than issues, from what I could tell the brief period I was on that forum. There is also a regional newsletter - I get the Orange County one, my brother gets the San Diego newsletter.

I agree that there is a role for MBCA and there is also a role for a competing organization. We already see what MBCA has to offer, and how they conduct themselves. Competition is good..it stimulates ideas, growth and development for all organizations involved. We know what MBCA has to offer as it is now, but what is yet to be explored is their potential should another organization be born. Many of us are members of MBCA by default......no other kid on the block. However, if a competing club is started, perhaps MBCA will see members leaving for calmer waters and more of what a club should be and the role it needs to take. Competition is good for all involved...old and new alike. Just some food for thought.
