Horn Sounds When Turning Steering Wheel
The horn in my daughter's '96 C280 sounds sometimes
when turning the steering wheel and you can hear something rattling around inside. Getting at the source of the rattle seems to a bit tricky. It looks like the 'housing' on the steering column is attached with two torx fasteners. Is this the piece that needs to be removed? If yes, does anybody know the size/type of the fasteners? If no, how do I go about removing the housing and/or getting at the horn mechanism? Thanks, Forrest |
It sounds like the clockspring is broken / on its way out. This is a wound-up strip of wire behind the airbag. You need to remove the airbag to get to it. There's two recessed torx fasteners on the rear of the steering wheel, which hold the airbag to the wheel.

Thanks speedy. Any idea on the torx size?
And removing the air bag sounds risky. Is it? If so, where could I get a step-by-step? Or is it best left to a pro? Forrest |
Disconnect the battery ground terminal. When you are done, re-attach it. You'll need the radio code but everything else should be OK. For the torx, try different sizes. You'll feel it when you get the right one. Should be snug with very little play. Once the airbag is free, the wires are easily disconnected.

Thanks, forp. I'll let you know how it works out.
