Quote from Popular Mechanics Feb 2001 issue:
"MBZ warns that replacement bumper covers for 202 chasis C class cars must be modified before installation to prevent overheating. A slot must be trimmed out of the cover to allow airflow to the radiator."

This is true!

Most of the models in europe do not have an airco system and have bumper covers (up to the end of "97) without grills for the radiator. If an after market airco is installed, a slot has to be trimmed out of the bumper cover for sufficient air-flow.
The later models (since 9-"97) have different bumpers (2 types) with an integrated grill. This grill is either covered with a closed or grated (black) panel.
I can imagine that the completely closed bumper covers do not provide enough air-flow for the "aircod" US-models.

In the Sport version

of the front bumper, it varies to model year! I have a '98
C280 Sport which has the grated section below the front bumper for NO air passage. Starting in the '99 model year this grated section is an OPEN grate letting more air in. So when asking at the dealer for the newer grate, couldn't find the part in the CD/parts info.

So, if the dealer can't find the correct part what do you do? I'm not about to start drilling out each section of the grate...not in my lifetime! Since still under warranty, it's an MB/C-USA problem if it overheats. OK so far.
