Transmission noise causes concern...

I saw a clean 560SEL in the paper w/ 150k miles. Saw and test drove it. Note: Car drove very good. Engine is in perfect shape. Tranny shifted good in all gears even reverse was good but when I was in reverse I heard like a louder than usual whine from the tranny. When in forward gears there is no whine? Could this be from the rear end? When travelling, the rear end sounds quiet. I dont know what that noise is. Tranny shifts fine and engages correctly? Also the tranny fluid needs to be replaced. If i replace it then would or could this noise go away?

tranny whine in reverse

the 'pressure' is higher in reverse so the oil pump has more load on it. A slight whine is normal. Excessive space between the engine torque plate and the torque convertor (before the connecting bolts are tightened) will pull the TQ out of the oil pump gear a little and can cause the whining.

I have a had a 420SEL 1987 with 145k miles and the noise on that was much quieter than this one but maybe this 560 just needs an adjustment? Tranny shifts fine in all gears.

Ok, put the car in reverse and then accelerated back but I didnt floor it. After I let go of the accelrator the car felt like it braked on me. It slowed down quickly and the noise got louder as you go faster in reverse. After this happened I had a hard time going forward or reverse and I slowly drove back to my home around the block. Now there is a more louder noise like someting hitting something. The noise is present now even when Idle! Im thinking my tranny went out but the teanny shifted perfect prior to me backing up that way.??? IM confused

Following your story but lost you somewhere here, are you talking about the 560, or your 420, that has come to a halt?

In your first post you wrote: "I saw a clean 560SEL in the paper w/ 150k miles. Saw and test drove it."

I was just wondering if you had in fact ended up buying this 560SEL, since you did not mention that you had in your next post, just that you were having trouble with it, so you see, I'm a little confused too!

I bought the 560SEL because it was clean and running good at the time I was test drving it. Got it for $3k so who can beat that? Now I just need a new tranny.
