instrument cluster removal '94 SL500

Just getting around to removing instrument cluster and sending it out for repair. However any special tools needed for removal, anything tricky about it?

I do not know what what your cluster looks like, but you might review the thread below - good photos of a another car.

Lets' Pull the Instrument Cluster!

OR

Use the SEARCH facility as I did.

in order to avoid any damage to the cluster face, i would avoid using any instrument cluster hooks. i have seen sevaral 129 and 140's with them damaged from this, instead pull the drivers knee bolster and reach up and push the cluster out, it may take a bit longer, but the cluster will not be damaged.

I used the puller tools on mine, but got impatient. One of the tools slipped, caught the lens and snapped it in two! $372 later, I was installing a new lens.

Pushing from the back is probably safer, but if you do use the pullers, be careful.

Also, when you do get the cluster out, don't yank the harness off unless you've already disconnected the battery. Otherwise, you'll trigger the SRS lamp, and you'll have to get the dealer to reset the code...
