1996 C220 A/C Compressor Clutch Questions

Hello All,

I need some electrical help. I troubleshot my A/C System today is the clutch is not engageing. I checked the Clutch Activation Relay (A) Silver unit made in Ireland. The Realay was good including the resistor. I then cut the Blue/Green wire from the Clutch and noted that the Clutch shows a dead short to ground as verified by a continueaty check with my multi-meter. So here is my question:

Where can I get a copy of the On-Board Electric Schematics for the Clutch?

What is the normal fix for a shorted to ground problem with the clutch?

Can I fix this problem on-board without removing the entire clutch/compressor assembly?

Where can I get the chart or master key for the A/C Control Panel Readings when I put the panel into the code display mode (I don't have any codes, so I guess that I don't have any faults other than the clutch)?

If you did not notice, my car is a 1996 C220. I love this car and hope not to have to retire it for another ten years. I have 140,000 miles on it now and expect to retire it after it has 300,000.

Don't know where you got the info on A/C clutch operation BUT it is wrong. ON the 1996 & later cars MB uses the A/C pushbutton to activate the clutch.

POWER from the pushbutton turns the A/C clutch on!

Okay, thank you for your input. You need to understand that all I have to guide me is the Owners manual and a Haynes manual for the RH Drive version of my car. So with this said, can you answer some of my questions? I bought two CD-Roms off E-Bay last night that are purportedly the correct Service Manuals for my car.

I would appreciate any help that can be thrown my way.

Very Best Regards,

Jeremy

You having continuity to ground through the clutch windings does not mean you have a short to ground.. you need an ohm value to determine if there is s short.
Do you have a value??

Resistance Value

Dear ARthur,

Sorry sir, I have been out of town I will attempt to get an Ohm value in the next few days.

Thanks for trying to help.

Jeremy
