I cant seem to find out which lights will fit my 1994 E420 can someone help me.
I looked in the owners manual and it said HB2 I dont know much a bout lights but I thought that they would be like H4 or 9004.
Can someone please tell me all the different lights that fit (H4 9004 I remember hearing that both the H? and 900? have a size that will fit). Keep in mind that I dont know much about lights.
Oh yea I would like to know about the High/Low beams and the fogs if you know them, and the stock wattage.
Thank You for your help.

The normal head lights in your car are 55/60W H4 (HB2). The fog lights are 55W H3. The head light housing is difficult to get to in the W124 E420, due to the air intake arms. The removal of these arms are NOT covered in the manual. I posted a while back concerning how to remove them, but nobody knew. I had to bring the car to the dealership to have new bulbs installed.

This site explains everything you ever wanted to know about bulbs! (and conversions, wiring, relays, blue bulbs, etc)

http://lighting.mbz.org/tech/info/bulb_types/

It says that HB2, 9003, and H4 are essentially the same, that the HB2 is an H4 "built to tighter tolerances". Hope this helps.

The headlight bulbs are 9004. I run 85/100W bulbs in both of my cars, which greatly improve the sub-par headlights to at least acceptable levels (sorry, guys, but my Honda lights were a lot brighter at 55 watts). However, you'll likely need to upgrade the headlight sockets, as the OE ones tend to melt with the higher wattage bulbs.

Good luck!

Michael,

I'm not 100% sure about this, but the head light bulbs in the '94 should be the same as the '95, and they are H4/9003/HB2's for sure, and H3's for the foglight. I remember readin' they did a swap to different bulbs with the head light updates. I think that is where the confusion is. I recently upgraded my bulbs, so I did some extra readin' on this forum and some research. However, I can only speak for '95, and not '94, so I may be wrong.

I am a littel confused

Just to get it straight the High/Low beams are H4/9003/HB2

And H3 on the fog lights

Thank You just trying to get everything perfectly clear.

The headlights use H4, which is also the same as the others, HB2, and probably 9003.

My car is a 92 which has the older style lights which use the 9004 bulbs.

You definately want the H4's or HB2's for your car if its a 94-95 model.

Subman,

Yes, you are correct. Just pick up H4's or H3's respectively for your car in the wattage I specified, and you should be okay (although you could go higher wattage, but that is another story). As I said, the headlight assembly is kinda odd on the W124 E420 and not covered in the manual, so you may want to look into that. I can give you a brief tutorial though, but I was a little afraid to take them off myself the first time, so if you find a service advisor at the dealership, they are more than happy to help you.

As you know, the two intake arms to the engine are connected to black plastic housings that cover your head light assembly. The arms are easy enough to remove, since you will notice the "soft joint" can be bent, and it is easy enough to simply pop the arms off. The tricky part follows; the driver's side intake arm connector has a plug connected to a socket. You have to first remove this plug. Then, you have to apply force UPWARDS and pull the black plastic covers off, same method for both sides. Then, the rest of the head light replacement process is covered in the user's manual. As I said before, I would just go to the dealership; they seem more then happy to replace 'em for me.

Just a suggestion about bulbs. I know there has been a lot of issues regarding the visibility using stock wattage aftermarket bulbs. Nevertheless, I must say I am more inclined myself to get the PIAA Super Plasma's, not so much more visibility, but for look. The stock wattage seem to be fine, and in terms of visibility, I did not detect any noticable difference, other than the light colour output that shines the road. However, a problem with using these bulbs is that they are SO bright, that they make the square head light assembly that house your main high/low beams to appear very DEFINED, which I did not like. So, I think it is in good taste to also replace the fog light assembly with PIAA Super Plasma in H3, which doesn't seem to be carried in North America, but they do have them in Japan, and I can suggest some online places where you can get them from, if you are interested. If you keep your fog lights as well as the head lights on simultaneously, your entire head light housing is completely illuminated, and looks VERY good, with just a little bit of definition between the fog lights and the main high/low beams. Furthermore, the Super Plasma produce a nice blue/purple core that expands/radiates outwards towards a lighter edge that looks very good, and with both fog and high/low beams running, it produces a very beautiful effect. Just my opinion.

The effect is like the picture below, except you will have more of a blue/purple tint to the head lights, and a nicer fading at the transition between the fog light and low/high beam housings (obviously, you don't have the bottom fog lights):

Duck Muck,
I was wondering how blue the lighs are, are they more blue than factory Xenons. I dont like the bulbs that are too blue (you know the cheap ones on honds). But from what i have read online the PIAA's seem to be one of the best blue bulbs out there. I like the BRIGHT White bulbs better than the fake Xenons (because most fake Xenons look to blue). Can you recomend any white bulbs or seed me a pic of your car at night if possible so I can see how they look, I am not against getting the PIAA's if they look good. e-mail me so we can talk.
Thanks

Subman,

I only catch a glimpse of the HID headlights ever so often on the road. From what I noticed, the disperson of blue is even throughout the light fixture for HID's. In the case of the PIAA Super Plasma, the core is bluish purple, and disperses outwards towards a lighter shade of blue...In terms of degree of bluishness, I think the core of the Super Plasma's are slightly bluer than the HID's, and disperse outwards to the same degree of blue.

In terms of the Super White, there are actually a number of variations. There is the Super White, Platinum Super White, and the Xtreme Super White. I think http://www.eautoworks.com carry them for a pretty decent price. I've only seen the Xtreme Super White, and I thought they looked pretty good. However, they seem to be a little strong, and make the entire head light section of the high/low beam look very defined. I didn't like it; I prefer more of a intense core that shades outwards.

I actually never took a picture of the light bulbs before...sorry.
