guide rail pin puller?

I am currently in the process of removing my cylinder head for gasket replacement and am trying to remove the timing chain guide rail. I want to try the bolt and washer technique but am weary of breaking the bolt off in the head of my 91' 300E. I did alot of searching and found a rail pin puller guide. I would like to use it on my engine but am unsure of what it presses against and dont want to break the chain guide. Anyone ever worked with a guide rail pin puller who know someone who has worked with one and did okay with it? Your imput would be much appreciated?

Thanks in advance.

no, I used the bolt and washers and so should you. Keep it simple.

bolt and washer

just as a precaution, would it damage the platic rail guide that the washer would be pressing against?

no....

in my opinion a puller would be more likely to do damage than the bolt and washer method. it seems wacky every time i do it but it always works and no problem.

I made a pin puller after trying the bolt and washer method, I could'nt bring myself to put tons of pressure on the plastic of the guide rail. I made it so the legs of the puller rested on the head itself.
I used a piece of thick steel bent in a U-shape and a hole drilled above the pin with a bolt and washers so as the bolt threads into the pin it pulls it out. Mine took alot of pressure, I don't know if it was stuck harder than normal or not, but I am glad I did it that way.
I also tried a homemade slide hammer and it did nothing.
Good luck, it's a pain but it will come out.
