coolant additive
 

hey guys,

88 560sl 80k .

i was thinking of using that coolant additive, called WETTER, it is supposes to keep the coolant temp lower? any advice on this?

I have used it...actually use it in my son's 300e. I don't see any difference in the temp gauge. It's Redline Wetter water or water wetter... Redline has a good rep, so I spent the 6 dollars.

MB antifreeze or its commercial equivalent - Zerex G-05 - has a very carefully formulated hybrid organic corrosion inhibitor package. It is best to mix 50/50 with water.

Unless you're a chemist and know exactly what is any ANY coolant additive, I would avoid using such, just as you do not need and should avoid use of any additive to any proper specification automotive fluid.

Some coolant additives may have a place in race cars, which often, by the rules cannot run antifreeze, since spills on the track are tough to clean up.

Beyond that, most automotive additives have another name - "snake oil". If you use OE recommended fluids you don't need additives. PERIOD!!!

Since that is a Redline product it was designed for RACING.

IF you read the instructions you will see the the greater mix of anti-freeze the less effective the Wetter Water will be! ON street cars that will have "little" or no effect on the engine temps IF the mix of antifreeze is 50/50.

Water Wetter won't change the reading on your temperature guage because it doesn't change the temperature at which the thermostat opens when everything is working properly. What it does do is increase the heat transfer capability of the coolant, so that the metal stays cooler than it would at the same guage temperature without the stuff. However, as someone else mentioned, it isn't as effective in a 50/50 mix as it is in plain water, which is unfortunate because the heat transfer capabilities of 50/50 ethylene glycol and water are not as good as plain water (another reason racers often use plain water rather than anti-freeze blend, in spite of the latter's much higher boiling point).

So, is there a positive effect of using Water Wetter and 50/50 or is it a wash.

Or in milder climates would it make sense to go 70/30 and using Water Wetter>?

Water Wetter (WW) and now Purple Ice (PI). Personnally I like the PI better since it doesn't leave an oil-like film. Look at the aqua colored box in Menu#17.
