Well i'm sure there is going to be many opinion's posted but personally i think the W124 Series is the best all rounder ever made but hey thats only my opinion. I'll try and keep a record of postings and let you's know which model came out on top thanks Nick.

I think if you do a search you'll find we've already beat this one to death. The consensus was the W124.

I believe ANY coupe is the winner. I do enjoy getting in the backseat of a SEL but how often are you back there. Therefore from a drivers standpoint, coupe baby. father had a 250C, now has a 300Cd and I have a 560 SEC.

I've always loved the w124 coupes. I've also always loved the W126 Coupes.

As far as the car that I think was built the best and the most reliable, a 124 in any flavor would fit the bill.

Now as far as a car that I think has stood the test of time as far as styling goes. you can't beat the 107SL styling. a style that was around for near 20 years.

The 600 limo (W100) was available, so to speak, from 64 through 80. Now that was a car built with no compromise to procurement or operating cost.

The best product mercedes ever delivered was the W201 190D.
This simple 4-cylinder diesel just goes on and on. We have 2 liter diesels of this model with more as 1.000.000km and still no problems.
The W124 had the same engine in Europe, but since the car is a lot heavier, these engines tend to brake down easier (after 700-800k km).
The 5- and 6-cylinders never drive that far without head or head-gasket problems.

The later C and E classes have to much electronic steered components (such as the fuel-pump) and need a lot more maintenance.

As far as I am concerned, the 190 Diesel is simply the best and there is no gas-burning engine that can even come close to the endurance capacity of this little diesel!
And besides, mercedes produced the W201 190 from 1982 till 1993! Eleven production years for such a daily-used car...must be a good one then...

I love my W123 Diesel. There are a zillion still on the road.

If you're talking about reliability. I think the older 70s-80s Mercedes, especially the Diesels. I think maybe the best was the 6.9, because of the engine. Have to admit, I don't know that much of the older Mercs. However, even with that much displacement for that time. It beats even a majority of cars today.

I have always enjoyed the 123 body style, both the 240D and the 300D. These are very dependable cars and were a pleasure to drive. However, for enjoyment on the longer trips(and safety), there is no comparison to the 300sdl. The SDL would get my vote overall.

Hey Nick,
As the owner of a 300TD id have to say that any of the mercedes diesels stand out as most reliable. As for most stylish, the 198 gullwing coupes stand out in front followed closely by the 107 coupes and roadsters then a distant 3rd the elegant 109s. The 6.9 SEL 116 is a great road car, the 5 cylinder turbo diesel arguably the best all-round M-B engine (power,economy,maintenance, and longevity)and the 109 being the most practical body style. If you could put all this together you'd have a car M-B unfortunately never built. My opinion everybody: the 1978-80 116 300SD. Classic body style and tough engine with good fuel economy. Just my $0.02, but why the W124???

Even though I own a W116 300SD, I'd have to say the W126. Don't get me wrong I love the fact that my big old 116 gets the fuel economy of my smaller VW, but as with many 116s, rust can be a problem.
