Tierod replacement 190e

Hello,

I need to replace the passenger side tierod. A few quick questions.

Do I want to keep the tie rod under load when removing or installing, e.g. Keep the car on the ground?

Is it simply a matter of undoing the nuts on both ends, forcing the connections off with the tierod puller, installing the newone and tightening the nuts?

If I keep the legnth of the tierod identical to the old one, is alignment required or only recommended?

Thanks and Best Regards,
josh

It's a really easy job, just as you've described. I did it years ago on mine with the wheel off. I personally didn't have any luck with the 'measure and hope' method. I had to have it aligned after. Do both sides while you're at it, so you will only need to align once. Tie rods are cheap.

I just did this with a 1991 300CE. Put the front end on jackstands. Take all safety precautions as you will be under there struggling to get these off. I did both sides even though it was only one side that was "notchy". I bought a kit that had several different pullers. Finding the one that fits the best makes the job much easier. Alignment is mandatory unless you like burning thru tires. The center tierod or drag link can be changed without further alignment but there are some that even advocate alignment after doing this.
