Best way to repair stripped exhaust stud?
I had an engine noise that sounded like a lifter but only under throttle and it was too loud to be a lifter. I found a loose exhaust bolt but it wouldn’t take the torque. The stud is spinning in the bore at about 35 ft/lbs. It is holding for now but I know it won’t hold very long.
What is the best way to repair this? Does the head or motor have to come out? I imagine removing the manifold and drilling the head to fit an insert. This one is going to be fun.

no big deal at all
friend you are lucky this is no big deal at all...
first there are a number of ways to repair this.... none of which require removing the head... and i think i could do it with even the exhaust manifold still on.... here are a few ways that come to mind... there is a right way and a wrong way i will list both... rightway 1. go to autozone and buy a tap set for about 9 dollars. use the correct tap and just screw it in and it will recut the threads... now buy your self a new stud or bolt and screw that in and your finished. 2. if this does not work go up to the next size tap and buy the next size bolt. 3. if this does not work then you can buy whats called a hellicoil that will insert into the whole.... 4. a shorter bolt may do the trick... wrong way 1. let engine cool and put JB weld in the whole and screw it in. |
