Ive been told that to update to the new 95 hood/grill the euro lights can't be used. Is this true? cause Ive been looking at a few 95 U.S headlight assemblies and they seem to be shaped the same.

From what I have seen, the light pattern and brightness on the 95 w124 lights solve all the problems of the old lights. The 95s use an H4 bulb and has a better reflector than the older 124s. If you want to use Euros, I have heard that a replacement lens that matches the new hood curve is available, but I haven't seen that particular conversion done. The Hella page
http://www.hella.com/maineng/lev1b/lev2bb/lev3bbc/mercedesw124.htm shows the various year 124 Euro lights and lens covers, which implies to me it would work with just a lens replacement, and maybe even without replacing the lens.

It is true. The euro headlights are box shaped while the 94-95 E320 lights have a engraved curve in the top inner corner of the glass to fit the hood.
You wouldn't be able to close the new hood with the Euro lights. Vin [Edited by vinamg on 01-25-2001 at 02:53 AM] |

however, you can change the lenses ont he Euro lights to the 94-95 style euro lenses and the hood would fit perfect.
I asked about this in another post, titled "just a thought..." So if you already have the euro's you can change the lenses tot he other style and would't pose a problem for the hood then. Now if you are going to buy euro's and want to update the hood to the new style, you should just get the 94-95 style euro lights so you don't have to change the lenses when you do the hood. Since the headlight itself is the same and the lens is just different, you should be able to swap the lens for a 94-95 style euro lens. Alon

I think you have to reread the answer I gave you on your question posted in the mail you have send me: How do I go about my euro lenses? Do I buy oem US headlight lenses from a 95 124 and replace it with the lens on my euro lights? I answered that the euro headlight units have replaceable lenses (in europe) and that the (curved corner) lenses on the 94-95 models are interchangeable on any headlight unit of a 85-94 W124. As Ashman told this is posted in the thread "just a thought..." as well... greetingz,

Out of curiosity, did the guy of bekkers tell you why or he just said it wont work?
Personally I see it like this. its more profitable to sell all new lights than just the lenses which are much cheaper. I would think that the headlight itself did not change, because it has to fit the same front fender openings on the cars. Now based on that, maybe on a US unit they arent interchangeable, but that is obvious. But if the lights are euro's then you should probably be able to just go with the lenses. I would think that its still cheaper to try just the euro 94-95 lenses first, then return them if it doesn't work, and then order the other lights. I think its going to take someone actually trying it before we know the tested method. But based on what I have been told and based on what I believe, the actual headlight itself on the euro models from 86-93 should be no different than a 94-95. the only difference should be the lens. 94-95 Euro lites are
AVAILABLE. I ordered a set of Euros for my 93 400E while it was in the body shop getting a new roof and the source sent the wrong ones. They thought the lights went from 86-94 with 95 being different. He said to return them for exchange but I sold them instead and have the correct ones coming in...with an extra set to sell also! They fit 86-93, asking $325 with the plug parts and no bulbs.
So getting back to 94-95 Euro, yes they are made and do have the arch in the upper corner to match the hood line of the newer model. They also have the Euro park light and the vacuum height chambers installed. If you desire a set of those, I also can offer them for the same price as above. Keep out of ditches!! TobiasMB 4 MBs |

Just to get the differences between head light units sorted out:
This picture is taken from my 1993 W124 300CE convertible and shows the fixations of the (older) euro lens on the euro head light units. In europe the lenses are fixed on the head lightunits with the clamps shown in the picture, all around. The reflectors inside the head light units, the vacuum height chambers and connectors at the back are all equal. There is no difference between the units before and after the hood change in 1994. The only(!) difference is the curve in the upper corner of the lens. I have changed these lenses in the past (updated "89 300D) and will change them on this 300CE as well (within a month). If the US version of the euro lights have the same clamps for fastening the lenses, than they are interchangeable... Let me know whether the US euro lights are the same! greetingz,
