No coolant going into radiator..HELP
Hi, Here's my huge problem..I need your suggestions, please..
I have a 87 300E.. The coolant isn't going into the radiator, brought to mechanic.. stated blown head gasket etc..cause radiator was cold and hoses were hot. Yesterday noticed water pump was pouring when running took to another mechanic and thought water pump.came home and fuse #7 was not connected., replaced. Thermostat hose looks like no coolant is going through it.. I won't drive my Benz until I can fix this huge problem..I also noticed NO smoke is coming from exhaust and car runs great . All suggestions are great appreciated.. :( |
had new thermostat installed today..It's not the thermostat
|
i had
a little trouble following your story. could you fill in some gaps?
is the water leaking onto the ground? are you sure that the thermostat is the correct one? that it is installed not backwards? does the guage indicate hot temps? tom w |
water
put a hose pipe in the over flow tank turn it on about 1/4
then on top of the water pump there is a bolt... loosen that bolt.. in fact just take it out.... start the car and when it warms up water will flow out that hole.... now.... disconnect the hose at the radiator water should be flowing out that hose if the car is running and warm... this proves your water pump and thermostat are working.... now, turn the hose up just a little that is in the over flow tank.... and you will also see water flow out the top of the radiator... now the overflow tank flows into the bottom of the radiator and if it flows out the top of the radiator then your radiator is not clogged either... if you think your head gasket is bad look for gunky oily stuff in your overflow tank and flowing out the disconnected radiator hose... |

yes thermostat is in correctly yes it's in the red line Thanks hope this helps |
thank you for inputs...
I agree w/ getting another mechanic.. I'm not a DIY, but do have cd manuals and an advent reader of these forums. I'm an ouside saleswoman and need dependable and safe transportation. Am now driving my Saab until I get my Benz fixed . I will try the hose method tomorrow and keep you informed .. |
well
if it is leaking out the weep hole in the water pump, it needs to be replaced.

poor girl
poor girl i have both saabs and mercedes...
i have a convertible saab but these things need attention.. so you have a water leak..... is it a big leak or a small leak... open the hood and take a look you probably can see where its coming from. there are many possible leaks... 1. from the water pump... which will be driping down the front of the engine. 2. I have seen cracked overflow tanks... and that would drip down the fender. 3. the various hoses will leak and you can see that. 4. often on these plastic radiators the neck breaks and it will leak there. 5. if the radiator is leaking it will come from the front of the car near the grill... the worst water leak is off the engine... probably the back of the engine.. this would be from the head gasket... and if your paying that is an expensive repair... but its worth doing on that car... dont throw it away... a diy'er can do a head gasket from 250 bucks to 500 so if that turns out to be the problem... lets find you a local diyer :sun_smile |
Thanks blueranger..
I will do the hose test later today..and let you know the outcome.. I love this Benz, will keep ,have alot of repairs in right now..runs great expect for this problem w/ only 124K ... I saw another mechanic yesterday and if it's the gasket, he'll flush the system and I'll try the Blue Devil to seal the heads etc. Hopefully it's the water pump.. The leak is coming from under the waterpump.. Thanks I do need a local diyer :sun_smile |
I'd say your water pump is toast

I'll let you know the status asap Thanks Cangold |
it could still be...
the thermostat...
just because it is new, doesn't mean it is working.. take that thing out of there and see what happens.. |
