Odometer help

1990 300D

Odometer stopped working at 179K. Pulled the speedo and saw that the shaft with the metal gear running through the total odo numbers was dsiplaced out enough so that the pinion gear wasn't engaging it. Pushed the shaft back in (appx 2-3 mm) to reengage the gear and the odometer worked fine for about 50 miles, then stopped again. Pretty sure the shaft has worked back out.

Anybody have similar experiences that could share a fix that will work.

Thanks,

Dan

Also search this forum for odometer for more info, this is a common problem.

Odometer

Dan,

When the odometer on my 90 300E died @ 179K mi., I searched around and noticed quite a few posts on how to do repair to get odometer working again ... but came across a post from one of the more knowledgeable members who suggested that the home remedy just bought you time and that you were eventually going to have to have a pro R&R if you really want problem fixed. I am committed to keeping my Benz running, so I bit the bullet and sent odo out for repair. There are services online (on e-bay, I think) that will do it for @ $100. I ended up sending mine to Steve Brotherton's shop in Florida. (Steve is member here and his brother, Scott, R&Rs odos. Charge was slightly higher, but I am pleased with work they did and my odo is doing fine at around 186K now.

KF,

thanks for the response. The odo repairs that are being referenced are on speedos that don't look like mine (there are no 4 screws to take off the back) and I think you are right. The fix is to have someone do it. At least, that's the fix for me.

Thanks,

Dan
