Power trunk opener failed

Guys -

The power trunk opener on my 2000 SL500 stopped working from either the dashboard switch or the remote key fob. I hear a noise when I push the button so I know that it is getting juice and trying. The red LED light on the dashboard switch does not light. It opens and closes just fine manually. There is a small plunger, about 1" round, embedded in the body of the car that engages a push button switch on the edge of the trunk lid which is about 5" to the left of the trunk latch. That plunger, which appears to be spring loaded, now sticks up about 2". In the past I never noticed this plunger sticking up. I don't know what this plunger does or if it is related to the power opener.

This is the 2nd time in 5 years that this has failed, the last time it was fixed for free under warranty. Now that the car is 5 years old I would like to learn how to diagnose & fix this myself. Can you help me or point me to a site where I can get instructions?

Thanks!

Please take the time to respond - power trunk failure on SL500

Guys -

Hard to believe but so far no responses to my earlier post on how to address a power trunk opener that won't work on a 2000 SL500. If someone out there doesn't offer assistance/advice then I will be forced to go to the dealer when I really want to fix it myself !!!

Someone out there knows what to do - please respond.

Much appreciated.

I have a 96 SL, so I don't have a power trunk opener. I didn't know the 129's even came with those. Sorry I can't offer much, but I would be very careful if you mess around back there, some have messed up the lock and not been able to open their trunk at all, that is a mess on that car since there is really no other way in the trunk. I would check the owners manual first to ensure it is operating properly and then if not take it to the dealer. I am pretty good with my 129, but when it comes to that rear lock, I don't mess with it, since it can goof up and leave you locked out for good.

this is not an uncommon problem. the cable that unlocks the latch and the lift assist has a worn cable housing. the cable housing slips past the retaining point causing the cable to become a bit too long and not enough tension to activate the latch. you can just replace the cable and that will work for awhile. i have better results when i fabricate a washer that fits perfectly in the retaining cavity keeping the cable from slipping past that point. anyone who works on these should be able to do this in a bit over an hour.
