Classic Technical Literature - Opinions?
I've recently purchased an '84 300D and I'm looking for some decent manuals and technical information.
I found these items on the MBUSA.com website. Has anyone used them? if so did you find them useful? Illustrated Parts Catalogue (Part# QL-6450-0014-30) Technical Data Book (Part# QL-6510-1274-02) Service Manual CD-Rom (Part# QL-6516-5610-02) Prices seem reasonable, particularly on the CD-rom (which kinda makes me suspicious - the bootleg shop manual CD-rom's on ebay are usually more expensive that this one). I am surprised at the low price of the service CD. It used to be a set of 2 disks for about $130. Most expensive coasters I ever bought.
The Technical Date book is handy to have. It contains a few things not found in the other manuals. The parts book is handy to see how things go together and to locate individual parts (does not contain part numbers however). All in all, I found the CD to be worthless. (Very difficult to locate what you are looking for). I greatly favor the paper manuals over the CD. The paper manuals are out of print, but you can still find them used. In place of the CD, you would need an engine manual, two volume chassis manual, climate control manual, electrical manual.

If the CD is like the 107 CD , what they did for older cars is to take bitmapped images of pages of the service manual (or at least the "most imporant" parts of it), turned them into Adobe PDF's, and then organized them (somewhat) with an HTML/Flash based front end. Not great, but I'd pay the $20 for it, not really that much more than the bootlegs.

A couple of the posts point you to online copies of the factory CD manual. These are very slow but they are free to access.
If you buy the factory CD ROM or a bootleg of it, it is good but not real convenient because you have to move between two discs to find your model. This little index tool will be very helpful. http://homepage.mac.com/dakota/1/index.html 230/8 |

There was a problem with the first version CD's, at least for the 123 chassis. Quite a bit of information was omitted, including critical ACC schematics. Mercedes informed me corrections were made in second version CD's.
I still perfer paper manuels, easier to read and much better pictures. Alan |
