Question Fuel Tank for W123

Hi there,

I am new to the site and i have the following question:

I have to replace the screen fuel tank filter in my 1983 300 D. Where is it located? Do I have to remove the tank completely?

Thank you

The screen attaches to the bottom of the tank. Look in the area above the right rear axle. You'll see a couple of hoses going into a cutout at the bottom of the trunk floor. The location means you'll have to drain the tank... voluntarily or involuntarily. Also requires something like a 40mm socket or dexterous use of channel locking pliers. I'm not sure if gaskets are involved.

are you sure you

have to change it? if you have fungus in the tank, you may be able to use fungicide and just let it sit over night and it will be fine. you will need to change the filters (fuel).

It may not be a clogged screen .... the second Mercedes I owned was a great 1979 240D that one day decided not to go up a particular hill. Every other hill (steeper or less fine) but just one particular hill.

Acted like it just ran out of fuel. It turned out the fuel inlet was being blocked by several silver tear-off tabs from bottles of RedLine Diesel fuel conditioner. I managed to remove these tabs going through the rear window parcel shelf after removing the emergency kit and fuel sending unit. I had to use a mirror and a flashlight but I spied them!

Fished them out with a long grasping hook.

Oh, and the car then went right up the hill.
