MB makes all of their auto-transmissions. Almost all have a custom valve body for the car & engine application. The 1996 & later use a computer programed for engine & chassis design.

I'm very certain that the 58-62 300d (W189) used a Borg Warner AT. I thought I read that the 3 speeds in US W116/R107 V8s had innards of some US pedigree.

I was told Mercedes DOES NOT MAKE autotransmissions, nor does any other car company other then the one that owns the patent! I have never seen a car with it "own" auto trans, my Peugeot is a ZF, Volvo is an AW, Mercedes ZF or Borg Warner?
It is the same with A/C compressors, one manufacturer owns the patent (I think AC DELCO)

Since I visited MB's Transmission plant in Moringen Germany I can assure you that the do make their own & have for over 30 years. The 722.0 series 3 speed was a variation of the 722.1 that came out in 1968. MB designed & built these transmissions not ZF or Borg Warner.

And my 58 300d has a "Detroit Automatic". It was also used in MK9 Jags.

I agree that MB makes their own trannies except maybe for some amounts of the ML drivetrain. I remember seeing BW or ZF on the transfer case of my wife's car (ML320).
