How to set timing - 420SEL ?

First off - is the timing even adjustable on an '89 420SEL ? Undoing the distributor's pinch bolt and moving the distributor one way or the other seemed to have no effect from what I saw using the timing light. Or am I missing something ? Is there a FAQ on the subject anywhere ?

timing on the 420 is not adjustable by conventional means, it should not need regular adjustment,

Exclamation

Timing on that engine is done by the flywheel & the ignition module, so moving the distributor WON'T cahnge the timing!

HOWEVER you must have the distributor lined up correctly at TDC of the ignition system may CROSSFIRE at higher RPM's.

The centerline of the rotor MUST line-up with the punch line on the distributor housing at TDC.

Thanks for the confirmation, MB Doc. Got some more questions though........
1) I'm unable to see or locate the mark you mention - is it supposed to be inside the distributor or on the outside ? For what it's worth, with the "0" mark on the front pulley / balancer against the pointer on the engine block, the rotor arm points directly at #1 / #6' s terminal post on the distributor cap.
2) I see the ignition advance bob-weights each have mounting points for a spring. My 420 has only one spring on one bob-weight - is this correct or is it missing one of what should be two springs ? If that's the case, guess that could explain the pinking............
Thanks again to all for your inputs............

Thumbs up

1) The mark you are looking for is inside the distributor. With the "0" mark on the front pulley the rotor must point to cylinder #1 terminal post, else rotate the front pulley 360 degrees further.
2) I had the same question here in Germany for my 420SL (Type 107).
The answer from two older German Mercedes experts is: Only one spring is used in this distributor type.

Best regards,
Michael
