Cool ML 500 rear door damper

I am stuck(?) on an island with no Mercedes dealership so I have to get help where I can. The rear door on my 2002 ML500 will not stay up when opened, something to do obviously with the shock system on the strut rods that hold it up. Any ideas on a simple fix? Or do the shocks need to be replaced? Is this doable by a backyard mechanic such as myself? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
