Question 380sl transmission downshift clunk

When I take my foot off the gas and the car begins to slow down there is a clunk coming from the rear each time the trans downshifts. Also there is a little play in the rear axles when I grab them next to the diffential and shake them. Anybody have any thoughts on this problem. Could it be in the cv joint.
