190E oil smell

I have a 86 190E the car really runs pretty good, but I occasionally smell oil, I do not see any around the valve cover and it does not use what I consider an unreasonable amount for a car with high mileage, however during hard acceleration it hesitates or misses for a second. I have changed all the basic things associated with poor performance (plugs, wires, cap...) but a man could spend a small fortune on the what if's! I am not sure the two problems are even related

Just looking for a little input and thank you everyone that has helped me in the past.
