vacuum change over valve symptoms?

I had a shop tell me my car needs a vacuum change over valve. My chech engine light has been coming on occasionally. Are there any symptoms this may be bad besides the light?

thanks in advance!

I assume you don't mean the change-over valves that control the various vents in the climate control system?

no, this is in a c280 in the engine compartment near the passengers firewall. It has something to do with the shifting of the transmission.
