S430 Side mirrors
Brand new to the website / forum. I just bought a 2000 S430, and the adjustment control for my sideview mirrors is broken (down arrow won't work). How hard is it to replace the unit myself?

Well you can pretty much determine that it is the switch if both mirrors will not go down, it is unlikely the motor is broken on both mirrors. I would get pricing from a couple of dealers on the switch, and ask if it is a common failure item when you call. Make sure you get your MBCA discount, that helps a lot. I don't know the new S that well as far as replacing the switch, I think I remember it being in the door? Good luck!

cheap trick for switch repair
Before you go replacing the switch, invest about $10 in a can of Contact/Control Cleaner and Lubricant from Radio Shack. I don't really know what this stuff is, and the label is no help, but it works like a charm on the finnicky MB switch gear. Get the switch out far enough to be able to shoot some of this into the holes in the plastic housing, wipe off the excess and you may be good to go. I have used it on several sticky/nonfunctional switches, including mirrors and seat controls, and it really works.
Good luck, g

yea that is a good trick, worked for me but I was able to completely remove my switch. Just be careful you don't let the stuff run down your leather on onto your plastic as it can discolor

Side mirror switch
I've been remiss on checking on responses, will do so much more often in the future. Haven't done anything about fixing the switch yet, but will attempt to give the spray a try.
Cheers, Nor. 18 year old McAllan still my current favorite, along with a Padron Anniversaire. Sweet. |

Dirtcal,
The mirror switch group is attached to the door control module. I would not suggest spraying solvent into there. The door control module is removed by carefully prying off the wood strip above the switches. This will expose a row of torx 20 screws. You will then need to carefully pry off the door pull handle outer cover. This will expose the last screw. Then the entire plastic housing with your door control module can be pulled off the door panel. Once you unclip the control module from the panel, you can access the mirror switch and wiring. I have the switch here in my hand and it is PN# 2208211551. It is easy to get to. Regards, Dr.D
