This is my first post and am pleased that Bill was kind enough to fix my logging in problem after reading this board a while. What a great resource. Thank you.

My question is this: After a custom stereo install my clock and tachometer do not work. My mechanic tried to "by-pass" what he thought was the problem, but didn't solve it. The clock now works with the key off, and the not when the key is on. The tach does not work at all.

It is going back tomorrow, and am hesitant to replace with a new cell, until we find the source of the problem.

Any suggestions? The installer is picking up the bill also.

Thanks again for having me, this place is great!

It really sounds as if a fuse is blown or cracked. I have seen many fail with just a hairline crack. Sometimes the simple can get you!!!

Thank you Donnie,

But would it be possible if the fuse is cracked the clock would keep time when off? Is your thinking that the hairline crack is enough to prevent it from getting electricity when other accessories are drawing power when on, then the clock could get "all" the power when everything else is off?

I've checked the fuses and none are blown, but I'll replace to see if there may be a crack.

Thank you,
Brian W.

Does your oil pressure gauge work? I had what sounds like a similar problem in my 1988 300E. It puzzled the hell out of me. The clock would keep time when off but as soon as you started the car it would stop or go slow. My oil pressure gauge quit, but my tach worked but was very slow to react and never would go past 3000rpms. I took out the instrument cluster and took it apart and found a tracer on the circuit board that wasn't making a definite connection. A little bit of solder and I was set. By the way my problem started when I pulled the instrument cluster and accidently touched the + lead for the clock on the ground and caused a short which blew the fuse as well.

Yes, the oil pressure, and everything else works fine, but not the clock when the car is on, and the tach not at all.

Just got home, so I'll try the fuses.

Thanks for the help,
Brian W.

Well Donnie, so far so good. I took the fuses out and replaced them, and voila! The tach and clock both work.

I only drive this one on nice days, so we'll see if this is the whole problem.

I can't imagine what this would have ended up costing me if I took it to my local dealership, and I'm not referring to only money, but frustration and time.

Thanks a million,
Brian W.

Well I came home today and decided to take it for a spin, and nothing...the tach and clock are not working again. Then, when I pulled into the garage and turned off the lights I noticed the tach would kick on. I did this several times and each time the tach would work. I even turned the car off and on and the tah would only work if the lights were off. Clock wasn't working at all...sigh
