My 1994 E420 has a persistent rattle coming from the rear view mirror. It jiggles a little bit as I travel over broken pavement. I could not see any visible screws, but notice that the housing where it connects to the roof is rubber and probably removable. Rather than just pry at it until I break it, I figured it would be best to ask for some help. Is there a way to tighten the mirror back up? Thanks.

Anyone? If it matters, I have the factory cell phone installed, which is immediately behind the rear view mirror mount. Thanks in advance to any friendly help.

Solid As A Rock...
This may not help, may be off topic, and may not be what you need, but hey, I responded...
My '82 300SD is old enough that the rear view mirror was floppin' around real loose. I pulled the mirror off of the mounting stalk, applied a little RTV silicone sealant, plunked it back on, let it dry, and guess what?

Rear view mirror rattle story
I had the same problem with my 300TE. The dealer replaced the mirror. It didn't fix it. I complained. The Mercedes area rep said it could be that the frame of the car was bent and had an oscillating tendency to it. A year later, when it became so annoying that I couldn't even look at it on a long trip, I took it off in an attempt to put some rubber tape to dampen it - I see the housing hanging by one screw. Tightened both screws and it is perfect now. So much for their expertise. I have an extra mirror if anyone want it.

Amge55 in da hous(ing)
So, what about the question about the screws? Are they under the rubber covering, and is it difficult ro r&r?
And, I might be interested in your extra mirror, if it'll fit my car. Mine's showing some age...

Mirror Replacement
It looks difficult because there is not an intuitive sign on how to do it. But the mirror is designed to break away in an accident, so there are some heavy duty springs in it that clamps it to the car. Just pushing on it will disengage it from where it seats. In my case I guess it just worked itself loose over time. I applied some thread lock and screwed the seat back in. To reinstall it you can probably figure it out from looking at the mirror.

Oh, the mirror should fit
The mirror came off of a 91 TE, so we have the same 124 platform. Although I can't be sure if MB made a change in that part from 91 to 94. Probably not because it was in the last part of the product cycle, and it wasn't a part that needed to be changed, but who knows?

Not A Mirror Image...
OOPS!
Sorry, wrong platform. I've got a W126. The dealer sez your mirror won't fit... Thanks.

mirror shakes
The mirror on my 88' 300TE is also loose. The mirror itself is loose at the pivot point on the bottom of the stem. The stem is very solid where it connects to the roof. After a close examinantion I do not see any way of tightening it. Any ideas/advice out there?

Hmmm, Where Have I Heard This Before?
Ed,
IF your RV mirror is like mein, it connects to the stalk via a ball & socket. You should be able to pull it off by applying steady pulling pressure to it. Then, referring back to my first response on this thread (ahem), apply a small amount of RTV silicone adhesive, or "shoe goo" to the ball or the socket, push it back on the stalk, and let it dry. Voila, no wobble...
