VIN for 96 320S hydraulic trans models?

I am considering a W140 and more specifically a 320 S. Enough acceleration though not as much as 500S. Anyway I was advised to get a 96 as best year. Early in year had 5 speed hydraulic trans which was apparently better than electrical one. Which VINs would have the hydraulic trans? I know if I call or ask on ebay the owner will not look under the car and know the trans type.
Thanks

Thanks. Can you tell between the hydraulically actuated 5 sp and the electrically actuated 5 sp? I was told to look for the hydraulically actuated ones.

Don't think the VIN has it - but the VIN could lead you to the VMI report (at the dealership) which would tell you whether the transmission was a 722.5 or a 722.6, the fully electronic. I was not aware that the change occurred during the 1996 model year - thought all 96s were 722.5s - but it's possible.

the electronic models will always have the W S switch next to the shifter, except for M and G class

Do you agree that the hydraulic ones are better?

"Better" is tough to define but the 722.6s don't have a very good record for durability, especially the early ones. There's a wealth of information on this in the archives. Adsitco.com transmission rebuild prices shed some light on the subject - 722.6s are $2695 while 722.5s are $2155. This is somewhat ironic because the .6s are supposed to be considerably easier to rebuild. The problem is that the parts are all MB proprietary and very expensive. But if you're looking for a 140 body with a reliable, easy to rebuild transmission you should get a V8 with 722.3 four speed - available through 95 or 96 I believe. These are only $1195 at Adsitco and they are quite durable.
