Hi!
I just bought a german imported MB E320 CE in Jan 2001. I recently read some internet sites that my car may be a 1994 model and not 1993, as stated in my swedish registration paper.

All these sites below:
http://www.thebenzbin.com/bbdu/models.htm
http://www.mercedesautoparts.com/chassis.html
http://www.mbz.org/cars/about/
http://www.adsitco.com/ref1.html#anchor10359610

Have these interesting lines:
300CE 88-89 124.050 103.983
300CE 90-93 124.051 104.980
300CE/E320 94-95 124.052 104.992
300CE/E320 93-95 124.066 104.992

My chassi No. also starts with 124.052. According to MB Sweden the car was built 25 Maj 1993 and the german book says that is was first taken in traffic in 3 Sep 1993.

Is the lines above correct or wrong?

Regards

I belive there was a face lift done to W124 in 94'
Very easy to tell by looking at the car !
If you have an older design - there is your answer :)

Is your grille big and chrome, or is it surrounded by body clolor metal around the chrome. Thats the easiest way to tell.

The other ways to tell are the trunk lid.

The 94-95 model trunklid has a chrome handle above the license plate which I would say is 12-18 inches long.

The 94-95 models also have red/smoked tail lights.

The front indicators will also be clear with an orange strip on the sides of the indicators.

one last thing is to look at the headlights with the hood open.

If the inner part of the headlights has a curve going down it where the hood meets up with the lights, then that should be a 94-95 model.

I do think that in 1993 some of the 124 cars were produced with the updated styling while still being a 1993.

generally i thought that new models for the next year came out in august, but it could very well be that they made some earlier in the year.

If your car has the items I described above then it is most likely the newer style 94-95 model of the 124.

hope that helps,

Alon

Your in Europe so you will not have the orange strip on the indicators as Ashman described but everything else he said is true.

Thanks for the help! I thought that the facelift came in 95 first.... And when I also read that the chassi number on my car was for the 94-95 car I thought my car was a 94.

Ashman,

The different trunk lids you described are not to be found on the W124 coupes and convertibles.
Mercedes mounted the newer trunk lids with the chrome handle on their saloons only and used a filler-plate (as described in another post) for the coupes and convertibles (together with the traditional black handle).

Mbenz, Thanks for the correction. :)

I thought the trunk was the same on sedans and coupes/convertibles? If I buy the newer trunk can I mount it on my coupe? The trunk lid with the crome handle would be very nice (including the new taillights) to have instead of the black handle.

NO, won't fitt...

The trunk lids on the coupes and convertibles are different; the trunk lid has a different shape near the edges of the rear screen and fenders!
The trunk lid of a sedan will not fit a coupe or conv.

Patrik,

The face-lifted w124 E320 (sedan and coupe) was out in Europe in 1993 ahead of the US cars which did not arrive until 94'. Your car is a 93', just as the papers indicate.

The easy to spot feature for the face-lift is the Benz Logo Ornament is on the Hood on the face lift style, not on the grill surround...
