What to pay for 91 300CE?

I am looking at at Florida car, very good condition, never wrecked that I can see, all body panel numbers match, no rust, no dings. Everything works except the radio, even the cruise works. 148k miles.

It needs tires and alignment and possibly ball joints or struts, since there is a slight clunk noise when turning and hitting a bump at the same time.

Interior looks very good, only slight wear on the driver seat.

How much should I offer?

I paid 4700 for mine...although a pre-purchase inspection turned up a slightly leaking expansion valve... I split the 200 replacement cost and re-charge with the seller... so I guess I got it for 4800.

Near mint interior...slight wear on drivers seat...it had 123k on the clock...black with grey interior. Exterior nice....but not perfect.

Very slight transmission leak...barely worth talking about... I don't have a belly pan, so I get a drop on the ground most mornings.

I've only had to do a voltage regulator , since I have had it... but I had one on the shelf.

I have one center vacuum pod that needs to be replaced...I will do all of them before the start of the next cooling season.. not much of an issue now.

I also want to do valve guide seals sometime in the next year.... great car.. no one thinks it's an 89...

Thanks for the response. The small farming town dealer that has this one is asking $8900, but will entertain offers. He's had it awhile. He's in an area where there aren't too many MBs. I think he's had it for probably over six months. I was thinking about offering $5500.

I forgot to add.... I also had a chance to talk to the mechanic who took care of the CE I purchased..... and had some service records....

I don't think service records are as importan as a PPI. If it wasn't taken care of you can tell a lot when a car is up on a lift.

DS, check the value on kbb.com and by all means have a PPI done. Last year I paid $7,500 for a 1991 300CE with 105,000 miles. It was a 1-owner car and has complete service records. Some cosmetic paintwork has been done to the right front fender and right door, but no collision repair. The interior is in mint condition and the original paint is in excellent shape.

If you haven't done so yet, I'd spend the 25 or 30 bucks it costs and do a carfax check to see how many owners it's had recently. The fewer the better. The obvious question is how did this FL car get to a small town dealer in northern Iowa? Possibly, someone bought on ebay, brought it home, then sold or traded it for whatever reason. Why? (BTW, have you checked ebay to see what CE's are bringing these days.) Unless it looks like new, $8,900 seems high, given mileage and remote location of car. Wonder if he's tried to sell it on ebay?

No knock on FL cars though. That's how I got mine..ebay from Tampa...88 CE purchased 12/01 with 41,000 on the odo. (now has 77,700). And yes, I did the carfax and ppi. (I am the 3rd non-dealer owner). Garnet red with a light tan interior. Beeutiful. Always (and still is) garaged and dealer seviced. Paid top dollar though...13.5...which was at top end of KBB back then. No regrets.

Final thought for you. In case you are not aware, search this site for W124 wiring harness issues. Was a problem in a few years in the early 90's 124 cars, including I assume the CE's. If it affected the 91's, it was probably replaced a long time ago. But, hey, that's what inspections are for.

Good luck.
