I've been checking my fuel mileage on my 87 190 Turbo Diesel and I'm only averaging about 25 mpg. I looked over the car and don't have any fuel leaks and haven't noticed any excessive smoking. Does this sound like bad injectors. I was expecting to be getting at least 30 to 35 mpg with such a small vehicle. Any suggestions?

There are many variables involved with fuel mileage. Do you drive stoplight to stoplight? Do you cruise on the highway? Do you just put it to the floor when accelerating?

We need more information to be able to help you.

Have a great day,

I usually drive a mix of city/freeway. I try to drive with a moderate foot. One thing that I do notice is sometimes if I am idling for a long period in a drive thru or traffic the exhaust become more noticeable. It tends to be a heavy blue, but I am not experiencing any oil burning.

If you have some stoplight to stoplight driving in this mix, you are probably not too far off at 25MPG.

In Stoplight to Stoplight driving, you are taking a good while getting up to speed with the throttle down. This is taking a good bit of extra fuel.

Make sure that your air filter is changed regularly, and seeing that the injectors are clean will also be a good step.

Good luck,

Sounds poorly to me jgauto, I have the 2-litre petrol 190E (also an '87) and generally get about 30mpg average (mostly on short journeys of say 5 miles around town with occasional motorway ones of 100 miles), without having a particularly light foot. I'd expect the diesel to average 35+ mpg easily.

I ahve the turbo version in my 300D 2.5 and I average about 40mmpg. My car smokes blue at idle, but I do not have any oil consumption. New injectors did not help either.
