M 104 Cam adjuster question

I've replaced the infamous headgasket on a m104 engine, however during reassembly my timing got lost, here's the thing that got me confused, what & how do i know that the cam adjuster is in retarded position, what is the retarded positon???!!! thanks anybody!!!
