i have recently aquired a 86 300 e auto trany, at 60 mph the motor is reving at 3000, i heard that this could be caused by a vaccum problem with the tranny, can anyone advise me of the fix for this such problem, also how are these cars? are the repair bills very high and are they reliable, mine has 145 on the clock what is the expectancy for this car.
thanks dave

Dave:

The straight 6cyl-SOHC motors used in many of the 300Es and 300SE/300SELs revv high. I was used to the lower revving Honda/Toyota cars B4 I acquired my MB 4 yrs. ago. It's also possible that you only feel 3 and not 4 shifts. Many also start out in 2nd gear by design. You get 1st gear by stomping the accelerator pedal.

3000rpm at 60mph in your car in quite normal. You're likely seeing 3400-3500rpm at 70mph.

Same for my 300E2.6. You just get used to it. Besides, that rpm is right it an inline 6 torque band... great for highwat passing.

Another way to start in first is to momentarily select "2" on your gear shifter then return to "D" and it will start in first. NIce for sitting at the bottom of a hill. If you accidently select "N" while getting back into "D" it disables this feature.

I'd say that 3000rpm at 60 mph is high, but not by much. 60mph for me is somewhere above 2500, but below 3000. 3000 is right aroun 70mph, and 3300 is about 80mph.

Hi Guys,
correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 3 shifts normal? i.e from 1st to 2nd(1st shift), 2nd to 3rd(2nd shift) and finally 3rd to 4th(3rd shift). Or is the 300E 5speed tranny? That'll make it 4 shifts!
Thnx in advance.

You should be getting about 70mph at 3000 rpm. Sounds like you are not getting 4th or overdrive. These trannys normally start in second gear so you will feel the 2->3 shift and the 3->4 shift. You may be in need of an adjustment to correct this problem. If you are only feeling 1 gear change then you are not getting high. If you are feeling 2, then you may be starting in first but not getting high. Could be as simple as linkage, vacuum modulator or could involve something stuck in the valve body. The 300E is the best,, if you take care of them..

My '88 300E does 2700 RPM @ 60 MPH, which is normal for this car.

3000 Rpm at 60 is in the ballpark. My 190E 2.6 Revs at about 3000 at 60 to 65 as I recall and about 3750 to 4000 at 80mph. How is you gas milage? Thats the key.

Today I was in Agrons car, and he was crusing (for part of the of way, to other part of the way he was doing twice that), at 62 mph and the car was revving at about 2850 or so. later coming home from Hofstra, I tested and also reved at about 3,000 RPM's at 60 mph. Don't worry.
