91 300e low gas mileage
hi, I bought 300e 91 with 199k recently (after I crashed my beloved 300dt 87), and car runs good but gets barely 20 mpg even though I try to drive it very softly. Changed spark plugs (hd9 Bosh). The old ones were not bad either.
There is nothing to tune on the engine, but something does not work right. How many mpg should good 300e 6 cyl. get if everything is OK? Also I noticed the transmission does not want to shift right away but delays for maybe 10-15 sec. when I take off first in the morning. Later in the day works OK. Checked oil and it is OK. Please reply if you have similar experience, or you know what I should check. Thank you, zxdent |

My 1990 300TE is about the same. I was told that the cold tranny holding the shift is due to emissions...makes the engine hit higher rpms early...which warms it up faster...warm engine equals less emissions. Hope its true as my wife complains about it all the time.
I have never gotten better than 20...and when it is all city..a bit of a heavy foot...I average around 17.

My '91 also hesitates to shift when cold. I have finally used this delay as a reminder (to me and the other family drivers) that one must drive gently until the engine warms up.
I often run this car at 75-80 MPH, sometimes faster when on the highway. Around town I take it easy and I get consistantly 21.5 MPG. If it were my car, I would run a large bottle of Techron Fuel Injector (not Fuel System) Cleaner in less than a full tank prior to an oil change. Also check the fuel mixture. Could be worn out injectors, dirty injectors or a O2 sensor going south. I have noticed, believe it or not, these cars like to be driven hard every so often (after properly warmed up). I do not hesitate to accelerate very hard having the RPMs go right up to redline. Seems to clean them out and they run better. My 2 cents, Haasman

1990 300E 2.6, 97K:
Never below 22 mpg winter/local (not city) Usually 24-26 mpg combined Sometimes 26-28 mpg highway As high as 29.x mpg highway, 55-60 mph (once!) The above figures the result of frequent monitoring - local, combined, as well as on several long trips (5,000 mile duration) Last edited by oliverb; 10-22-2005 at 03:49 PM. |
