Engine Wiring Harness - You should Check

I have a 1993 300SD with 255,000 miles on it.

I had a problem with one of the auxillary fans running all
the time.

Upon inspection, the dealer found that my wiring harness
had a bunch of cracks in it. I have the harness. For part
of it as least, there is a crack in the wires about every
1/8th inch.

So, if you have over 150,000 miles or so or are having
wiered electrical problems, you may want to have your
wiring harness checked.....just bring your wallet!

It's pretty well known that 90s MBs through 95 have engine bay wiring harness problems stemming from inadequate thermal insulation.

Thanks for the notice but it's in the archives.

I was thinking that this problem was only an issue on the late 80s to 93' E-Class models.

I have not heard any problems like this on any S-Class sedan, or at least not on the 81-91 models. Would a 90' 300SEL be a candidate for this problem?

Thanks for sharing your information.

I haven't heard of any W126 or W201 cars affected. I expect they used harnesses built to the old spec. I've heard of harness problems with W124, W202 and W140 cars. Even Diesels.

This has been written about here. Its amazing people are still learning about this. I bet that means there are still a tone of these cars out there that have not been fixed.

Please, when you post your letter here, take an extra minute to file a complaint with the national highway transportation at the following web site: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

You could also send a letter to paul halata (c.e.o.) at: paul.halata@mbusa.com.

I know a lot of people decide to pay for these out of their own pocket but Mercedes cannot be irresponsible for their products just because they are now 10 years old. Ford recently issued a recall on older vehicles.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. Probably used the same basic harness on the 86-91 S-Class sedans, that they used on the 81-85 models. I hope anyway.

It certainly affects the S class...

Seems as though.... what a bummer.

At least the 91-older S-Class seem to be OK.

Thanks for posting that link. It looks very informative for 92+ S-Class owners.
