I am impressed. Lots of good used engines here.
I have a long way to go on mine at just 173,000 miles.
Just a hint of a head gasket leak but not loosing much oil.

Keep the posts going.
Would love to see someone with 500K miles on these engines.

Just reached the 200K this weekend on my M104
Synthetic Mobil1 15w-50on 15K intervals sience new and it does not burn or leak a single drop of oil!!!!!
Runing like new.

We sold our 1990 190E 2.6 with just under 400,000kms on the odo to a fellow that drives quite a bit. He's just crossed 500,000kms and the engine has never had any work other than a timing chain and tensioner. (Badge time!)

If you simply list the car on E-bay you can double the anticipated longevity - it seems to be the rule there.

My 300E has almost 287,000 miles and couldn't be in any better shape. I just took a 2300 mile trip and it got record fuel mileage and used about 1/3 to 1/2 quart of oil on the trip.

Before the trip I put in a fresh set of copper cores gapped at .035 and then ran a tank of reformulated gas through it on a long 70MPH run. After that run it has NEVER idled smoother since I've owned it. An engine has to be in top shape to achieve a smooth idle under any conditions.

lizem100 failed to point out that his 103 engine has well over 300,000 miles and its condition is as good as mine.

Mine has had no special care except for 3,333 mile oil and filter changes and a magnetic drain plug in the oil pan. These engines properly cared for will run a LOOoong way.

Interesting...Larry when you do the oil changes do you find metal particles on the magnetic drain plug? I assume that is the purpose, to attract and contain any loose metal bits in the engine.

I've been using magnetic drain plugs in most of my engines for over 30 years. There will always be a very light black film on the magnet at oil change time. Sometimes it will be heavier. It is fine black dust, not slivers of metal.

Last January I got caught in Kansas City in an ice storm for about three days. It took a few hours to get the ice off the car so that I could thaw it out enough to head home. I was running my normal 15W40 because I never have to deal with 5 degrees temp for extended periods of time as I did for those few days. When I started the car it did not sound real good. At the next oil change, as I expected, there was a greater than normal amount of black powder on the magnet. Better on the magnet than circulating through the system. I expect that these particles are small enough that the filter will not trap them.

I have just 245k or so miles.

My 5 y/o likes the idea that it has gone to the moon (229k).

No work ever done on the motor.
Pulls strong. I generally get 26-28MPG despite a typical 80mph cruising speed, which seems like a healthy indicator.

Looks like rust is going to be the executioner for this one, as is the usual case in the northeast. It has held up better than most 20yo cars though.

I once knew someone with a 400k 450SE. Pretty good for a gas motor.
