2000 C 230 Kompressor 100k B check
 

Hi I am new to the Mercedes world, and I am a tecnnician for an airline, so I can figure most things out myself, also I always repaired my own vehicles and this c230 k looks simple, but is it worth taking it to the dealer? What is all involved in the service check. I wish to do most myself and may-be have the computer re-set. Does anyome have any suggestions and or advice? The car is was used and it had all its service done prior to me owning it, but it is used and maybe should have a good look over, what do you think??

Not a difficult car to work on. Did you get an owner's manual and documents with the car? If so, the holder that contains the owner's manual should conatain a maintenance pamphlet that details all the service work to be done at each interval.

Also, what year is the car?

My benz is a 2000 C230 Kompresser, but it came with the manual which is for an 2000 SLK 230. They are simualir but the maintenance schedule is not too clear. I am trying to do all the simple and non techanical stulf myself then have the dealer look it over and reset any faults. I have no place to work on the car because I live in an apartment in Atlanta. I done the rear brakes and come minor cosmitic things but I feel I will shouldn't pay $90.00 for an oil change when that is all that may be needed. Thanks for your help.

The maintenance schedule for the SLK will be the same as the one on your car.

There is not really a whole lot that gets done on the A and B checks, it is a lot of check this and check that.

Mostly, its an oil/filter change, new windshield wiper blade, change the climate control dust filter, change the engine air filter if its needed, check the serpentine belt, check for leaks anywhere on the car, check the brakes, etc.

Also, at 100k miles, the spark plugs should be changed. Additional things I would change on the car if you are not sure how long it has been are the coolant and brake fluid. And, although it is "supposed" to be a permanent fill, I recommend changing the transmision fluid and filter. Do a search on 722.6 and you will find a huge debate over fluid and filter changes on this car.

Thanks for all the infomation. I felt the same as far as the service check is concerned. Do you think I should still take it to the dealer so the information on the car will be entered into the data base, because the car has had all it prior services and the FSS computer need to be reset? Also, do you have any good ideas as to buying a maintenance manual an or a CD?

Don't know about the service CD or manual, but the instructions on how to reset the FSS counter are in the standard owner's manual.

For my own car, I keep a record of all the mainenance that I do on the car. You would mostly be concerned about having a hard paper trail of all the maintenance if you plan on selling it soon. If you don't plan on selling it soon, I don't think it would make a huge difference in the resale value a few years down the road when the car won't be worth much anyway. It certainly won't justify the insane extra money you would have to spend to have the car serviced at the dealer.

For maintenance I do what the book says to do on my car and a few extra things as well.

Not that's it's hugely close, I seem to remember someone here is in Bristol. He had a ex-dealership mechanic which did the work in a garage behind his house and prices were 1/2 or so. Might dig around.
There are a bunch of little things to check, and lube. You can buy a maintence manual I believe from MB. Maybe even a CD or DVD manual. I think this routine stuff is the important time to find problems before they become serious and costly issues.

Thanks for all your assistance, I still think I will attempt to do most of the service myself. I guess I should go out and buy the parts. The oil change on this car looks to be simple, does any have any suggestions and are there any special parts needed?

Good prices on the parts from Fastlane above. Oil change can be changed through dipstick tube or the traditional way from underneath. Make sure you have a wrench or are strong enough to get the oil filter housing cap off. Other than that it is pretty standard, make sure you don't overfill.

you can buy the factory oil fiter wrench thingy for $10. I prefer using a suction oil remover, cost $30-100 but really makes things clean and easy. no need to mess with removing the lower panels.
