1988 420SEL / 126 engine suddenly dies wont restart
 

recently when going over a highway railroad crossing at a relatively moderate speed the engine died after crossing the tracks. ...and wouldn't restart until a half hour later.
later that day while taking a left hand turn at 20-25 MPH the engine suddenly died in mid turn. and would not restart at all.

after having the vehicle towed home and left sitting 4 hours the engine started no problem that evening, then would not restart the next morning. but started and ran for hours the day after? ..and starts all the time now.
it will run for hours if left sitting idling or occasionally racing the engine. but i'm too afraid to drive it anywhere in fear of that it will suddenly die again and leave me stranded.

note: not low on gas as the tank had been recently topped off. new spark plugs and wires for 3 months. recently passed emissions test. fuel pumps and filter look original, but pumps are heard to be working when engine is running.

what is or could be going on ?

when the pumps are working you should hear a slight hissing sound and sound will vary. Change the fuel lines and filters and see what happens. If it isnt fuel related I would check your alternator and battery- just a wild guess to solve your problem if that is the problem
