Hi!
Only a few of the lines in my rear window . A new window to this car cost 9.600 SEK (990 USD) in Sweden (incl. our 25% tax). That's a lot of money for me just right now...

So, does anyone know if the price I got is OK or are the price different for other brands of windows (I didn't ask which brand this was)? I live in Sweden, so any price from the European countries would be extra nice to read.

you wrote Only a few of the lines in my rear window... and if the second part of this sentence had to be: ...do defrost and the other lines are not doing anything at all anymore, you can save yourslef some money. It is possible to repair these lines there where they are broken/interrupted.

There was a post/thread about this topic(this week) in the diesel section started by someone called silverbullet...

If you still want to exchange the rear window, I can give you a dutch indication...

Oops, sorry. Yes, you are right, only a few lines are working and I did found the thread in the diesel section at:

My rear window have milky white substance all around the window far most out AND is the luxury model. Or as You wrote in this, http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/13379-126-rear-defogger-problem.html , "Mercedes uses a defroster with very tiny sinus-waved elements in the more expensive models and these elements are stuck between the different layers of the rear screen".

I phoned some junkyard but apparently the rear window is glued and it is impossible to remove it without destroying it. MB had some trouble before; if you lowered the side windows while driving fast the read window would fell out, so MB glue all read windows now.

A price indication from Dutch would be nice to have. Of course the shipping cost some too, but if the price is good... The window is not broken, just the lines in it, I'm in no rush.

Your insurance might cover this as it is defective(window is delaminating) which weakens the glass. They will pay for it if it happens to get a crack or chip in it. Good Liuck. Oh mine cost the insurance co. $1,060 installed. Make sure you get a new MB seal. The glass will be MB as well. As far as I know they do not make aftermarket rears due to complexity of defogger.

Have you tried MB ATC? They do have a W124 rear window available for 250DM (127,82 euros). They are an used parts and MB recycling center. Their web site is: http://www.mbatc.de/ and they are located in Germany. Hope this helps.

if you have the sinus shaped elements between the layers instead of the horizontal layers on the innerside as with the W124 saloon, it is probably impossible to repair the rear window.
The glued rear windows can be taken out without any problem!! I have sawed my own rear window out some 8 months ago to get the window(s) coated; no problem at all.

I will have a look at the dutch prices just to give you an indication...

Bigshot, the window is not broken, the rear defroster does not work properly anymore. I don't know what the insurance companies in Sweden do, but the dutch companies hardly pay for the windscreen when it gets broken by a stone (or whatever). As a matter of fact, the insurance companies do not want to pay anything and therefore exclude a lot of the car parts.

That is a lot of money just to get a rear window defrosted and I realize where you live and the conditions. Here in the states there are electric heaters available to put in your car and with a little bit of ingenuity, wiring, a switch and ducting, a rear window defroster could be created. And for a LOT less than the cost of replacing the window. Most glass shops get close to $125 to replace the window in labor plus the cost of the glass. You could do the electric heater for less than the labor alone. A good weekend DIY job!!

Yes Bigshot, the insurance do pay they windows if the get a crack or a chip in them (big chip in the drivers area is not legal to have either) but one usually have to pay some money of your own.

The company I used to have only wanted 1.200 SEK from me (the new company is much cheaper/year) but this company wants 35% or minimum 1.000 SEK, that would be 3.400 SEK if the window cost 9.600 SEK (the price incl. the work also). I doubt that my insurance company lets me use the insurance for a delaminating rear window. And how do I get an stone in the rear window? Well, that could be arranged but I think that is unlegal.

Thanks for the info Dave, I believe that the window offered is for sedans (coupes have different rear windows). I saved the link anyway. I have the car under a "car roof" so I don't have to remove any ice on it, the inside is still visable and at work I have in a garage. (+12 degree Celsius). Of course, my new winter tires cost me 5.000 SEK and the alarm (with immobilizer) cost 5.200 SEK so 9.600 is not that much when I think about it.

I will have to think about what to do.
