M112/M113 Upper Pulley Problem

A friend of mine had the upper pulley shatter on his G500 recently while on the Interstate. The only indication was the "Engine Over Heating" warning in the dash display. The nearest dealer claimed that he had never seen this problem, but just happened to have one in stock; and got him back on the road in short order.

The fact that the dealer just happened to have the part in stock prompted him to ask around, and his feedback is that this is quite a common problem.

Is it? Is this a part that someone with a toolbox should keep as one of their emergency backup spares?
