Is that a model whith a rheostat to control brightness of the lights ?

on some models the trip odometer switch controls the brightness of the dash lights. turn it to the right and see. it's worth a try.

taker22 makes a good point. If it has a second knob toward's the left, then that would be the dimmer. I've seen some member's post that if you slightly "bind" the dimmer a number of time's while turning the light's might start functioning. Obviously, this last, assume's you have a dimmer. My 69 220D uses a separate control for the trip odometer and dash light dimmer, but follow taker22's advice if this is not the case.
