Troubleshooting a starting problem - next step?

1993 400E with 160,000 miles
I had the wiring harness replaced last year and no problems from that, that I know of.
It just wouldn't start one morning, it's in my driveway.
Here are the things that I have checked so far. I'm limited somewhat to the top because I only have a car jack to work with.
The battery is charged and the cable connections are good. (Battry is in the trunk.)
When I try to start it there is no noise that comes from the bottom of the car. There is a slight click that comes from the right front which I don't think is related to the starter, although I don't know what it is.
The headlights don't dim when I try to start it.
The cigar lighter works.
I have recycled the door locks and that doesen't help.
I have moved the shifting lever arround in both park and netural and nothing happens.
Can antbody guide to the next step?
Thanks in advance.

If the Neutral Safety Switch is original it is likely the reason you can't start the car. You will find a great amount of info on this subject by searching for 'Neutral Safety Switch' on this forum

Thanks, I moved it (shifting lever) into every which position in both netural and park while the key was in the start position and couldn't get it to change anything. I'm not sure where the switch is actually positioned...
I wonder if it could be reached from under the car, just for a test?
Does anybody know?
Thanks

Sam,
Here is how I determined that my NSS was the problem. The method is courtesy of Arthur Dalton who writes:

"Here is another prof positive test that will test the same point , but in a different way..
Get a jumper wire and hook one end to the bat + ...
Now, unplug the connector at booster and I want you to look at the 3 MALE connectors at the part of the connector that is screwed to the wall..[not the part you unplugged w/ female connectors]
Take your bat + wire and touch the CENTER MALE connector .. the starter should crank the engine ..if not , you have a problem at the starter or wire going from this connector to the starter.. if the starter turns the engine over [ cranks] w/test, the starter/sol are verified as GOOD. This means you are not getting power at the wall 3 prong connector and the problem is in the NSS circuit.."

Sam
The connection in Mr Dalton's directions is near the brake master cylinder but located on the 'wall' between the engine and the master cylinder and vacuum booster. Disconnect the plug and apply the battery's voltage to the cnter male pin; a really easy test (you may have to put the ignition and turn to "run", I don't remember).

regards,
Mark

Thanks Mark & Mr. Dalton,
I can do that!
I'll let you know what happens.

Mark I just can't find the connector you described. Sorry to be so dense but could you confirm the location? I'm sure I understood what you described but I can't find it. Maybe I have a different engine. I looked it up and here's the information.
124.034 Chassis
119.975 Engine
Thanks
