How does roof rack attach to W124 coupes?

The 300CE only has 4 hidden nuts in the roof. (one per corner) In this picture of an MB roof rack on a 300CE, it looks like the "foot" has two bolts that hold it down.

Is there a flange of some sort that gets mounted to the car first? A picture of how this attaches would be awesome. BTW, I'm fabricating a way to mount a Yakima roof rack because I can't find anyone who makes one for the car without paying $500+ to get it from Australia.

TIA,
Dan

There's a hole in the roof for mounting the rear bar. Covered by a flap.

Roof Racks: for various Mercedes-Benz models (C107-W220) to carry bicycles, skis, luggage boxes, etc. Custom-made by Oris of Germany (OEM supplier); new or trade-ins, from Canada. German Motor Imports, 1085 Davenport Rd., Toronto, Ont., M6G 2C2, Canada; 416/652-1404; fax 652-8364.

Ok, so I have four hidden nuts in my roof. One at each corner of where a rack would go. But the rack itself seems to need 2 bolts at each corner. That's where I'm confused.

I suspect the OE (Oris) rack in your photo has "feet" for stability and that the feet are centered over the mounting inserts and something screws from the center.

That could make sense. Ok, now need to hear from someone who has one to confirm or take a picture. I'm guessing this configuration is not lockable to the car in any way.

Thanks for the help and used parts reference!

Kent has described it accurately. One captive bolt, internal to the rack, is inserted and tightened at each of the 4 mounting locations. Rack is completely lockable - ie, the bolt is only accessable when the rack mount mechanism is in the un-locked position. A very secure and robust design.

Maybe I can take a picture in the next day or two.

Yea, I think I get it. One bolt but the rack has a "foot". A close up pic would be great tho.

Here are some quick pics I took of the rack and how it mounts on my coupe.

Hope this helps, Dan.

Hey...

Do they sell them for 4-door W124's too?

Yes, but they don't mount like the coupes.

Rather, bracket fit into door jambs--there are arrow marks showing where.

For sedans, Thule does have a fit kit, so you're not limited to OEM Oris racks.

WOW, that has got to be the "reply" of the century. Thanks a lot for taking the time to put the pics up with such a nice presentation.
