1989 420 SEL Transmission
On a 1989 420 SEL, 250,000 KM, when going about 20 KPH, sometimes there is feeling that the transmission is disengaging and re-engaging, it is sort of a choppy or jerky movement. There is a sound of it lightly clunking in and out. At other speeds, everything seems fine. Reverse is fine.
All exterior seals were replaced about a year ago. Fluid and filter were supposed to have been changed at the same time, about 15K KM ago. Fluid level may be a bit high when hot, it's quite difficult to tell the level. Just had the motor mounts replaced. The engine purrs like a kitten, very smooth, no rough idle. Any suggestions?

What are the shifts like at various engine speeds?
Perform full throttle or close to full throttle up and downshifts and see what the gearbox does. If there is flaring then you can adjust the modulator pressure. If the upshifts are soft and the downshifts hard then it's not the pressure and it really needs someone who can diagnose these boxes. At that milage a rebuild wouldn't be out of the question. Matt. |

Clogged transmissions filter. Low transmission fluid level. A failing/ leaking B2 piston. A failing B2 would also cause no forward gears, slipping forward gears, reverse gear would work. I would check the level first.Drive the car for a couple of miles until the car reaches operating temperature, stable temperature gauge; check the fluid level on both sides of the dip stick, read both sides at the same time, the lowest reading is the true level.

Shifting
As we all know, this 722.3 transmission starts in 2nd gear. When I accelerate slowly, it clunks into third, it is quite smooth into 4th.
When accelerating rapidly, 2nd to 3rd is smooth, 3rd to 4th smooth. I'll double check that fluid level on both sides of the dip stick. I was quoted C$1,695 to rebuild the transmission, with all upgrades and OEM parts, which will take about 5 days. Plus C$500 to drop, and reinstall the transmission. Is this reasonable? Here is what they do http://www.wolfetransmissions.com/manuf1.html

Around $2500 is the average price for a quality rebuilt 722.3 transmissions install; I would be concerned about there warranty, 12month warranty does not reflect any confidence in their product.
How about tech support, how can a company that only sees the transmission on a bench develop any true hands on diagnostic experience. What do you do and who will fix, diagnose any drivability problems, certainly not the shop that’s doing the installation, if they don’t have the conferdance and knowledge to do the rebuilding how can they fix a problem. Just my opinion. |
